The Coordination Office of the Fortresses of Santa Catarina Island (CFISC) is the administrative unit of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), linked to the Secretariat of Culture, Art, and Sports (SeCArtE). It is responsible for the management, custody, maintenance, and conservation of the fortresses of Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim, São José da Ponta Grossa, and Santo Antônio de Ratones, which are under UFSC’s administration.

The three UFSC fortresses were part of the former defensive system created by the Portuguese Crown starting in 1739, with the purpose of guarding the entrance to the northern channel of Santa Catarina Island. They were declared National Historic Heritage sites in 1938, and their preservation is also under the responsibility of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN).

After a period of abandonment and ruin, the fortresses were restored under UFSC’s coordination during the 1980s and 1990s, in partnership with IPHAN and other institutions. The Fortress of Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim has been under UFSC’s management since 1979 and was opened to public visitation in 1984. The Fortress of Santo Antônio de Ratones came under UFSC’s custody in 1991 and was opened to the public the following year. Finally, the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa, opened to the public in 1992, has also been managed by the university since that date.

CFISC is located on the second floor of the UFSC Culture and Events Center. To get in touch, send an email to fortalezas@contato.ufsc.br or call (48) 3721-8302.
